“Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.”

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships

What is Team Coaching?

Team coaching is a strategy used to increase team collaboration, moral, productivity and effectiveness. Team coaching is facilitated to a group of people in an organization working together on a common, shared goal.

Used effectively, it can boost the stability, moral and productivity for the good of the organization.

Why do organizations want team coaching?

One of the most common reasons that organizations want team coaching is because there is a gap between the type of work being performed and the type of work that can actually be done. This may be caused by habits (behaviors), lack of knowledge, various personalities, low moral, or mis-aligned roles/work styles.

Team coaching improves performance by bringing individuals together to identify and work through problems as a team.

What are the benefits of team coaching?

Some of the key benefits of team coaching include increasing team alignment, creating the right environment to hold real conversations and giving leaders support by proving a neutral party. Although this list is not exhaustive, any team that works with a coach can expect to enjoy the these benefits.

Increasing team alignment

Team coaching offers the opportunity for the entire team to align personally and purposely. While the sessions alone are a team building exercise, team coaching provides the opportunity to plan, set intentions and create action plans that bring teams together to become more effective.

A coaching program geared around creating shared goals, ideal team roles and interdependencies is one of the best ways for everyone to get aligned and maximize team performance.

Creating the right environment

Many discussions never get the right attention and even if they do, some teams fail to create the right environment for collaboration. Team coaching is not only a space to have those important discussions, but it also creates a space that encourages real conversations.

Team coaching helps teams revel the good, bad and ugly in a safe and encouraging way.  A coach helps to ensure that every voice is heard. Then they help put that information discovered to use in a practical and action oriented way.

Giving Leaders support and Providing a neutral party

Some employees may be afraid to open up and share their thoughts or experiences due to repercussions. These thoughts or experiences can hinder an individuals performance and thus, the teams overall productivity and effectiveness.

Having a coach provides a neutral party to help steer conversations, act as a sounding board and hold every individual (including the leaders) accountable. This supporting role is exactly how a coach serves each team member’s ability to contribute and to show

What is the difference between team and 1-on-1 coaching?

In 1-on-1 coaching, an individual meets with their coach on a consistent basis to work on individual goals, habits or intentions. 1-on-1 coaching is designed to meet the individual where they are in life. For some, that means work and career growth. For others, it could mean life and personal growth. In either case, coaching is a tool for whole-person success, which means all aspects of one’s life receive attention.

A coach serves as your dedicated thought and accountability partner. 1-on-1 coaching helps individuals identify any problems, obstacles or goals, determine possible solutions and assists with creating an action plan. Because this is most immersive coaching experience, it’s also the most impactful.

In addition to 1-on-1 coaching, team coaching improves team performance by bringing together individuals who work together to increase the effectiveness and cohesiveness of the team. Coaching sessions provide the ability to identify and work through problems as a team.

It’s important to note that some team coaching programs leverage 1-on-1 coaching as part of the same program. In fact, the most effective programs involve 1-on-1 coaching for each member of the team, along with group sessions designed for real-time collaboration, discussion, and ideation.
